Image
By Evan Dalton for Formula Vee Ireland Sean McClements During The B/C Race | Photo by Jimmy Graham It was the day of destiny for Sean McClements, who claimed his first Formula Vee National Championship victory in the opening round of the season at Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit.  The 19 year old from Dunloy, Co.Antrim, took the race win in both Round 1 of the National Championship, and the opening B/C class race of the year with two stellar drives.  Kirkistown, located on the Ards peninsula, returned as the series opening round after a brief hiatus in 2024. The 1.5 mile circuit boasts high speeds and close slipstream battling, amongst a plethora of tricky corners and the ever difficult ‘John Crossle Chicane.’  Rainy showers were appearing throughout the morning, but qualifying ran unaffected and in dry conditions. Two time champion Gavin Buckley, who only vacated the ski slopes on Thursday, was instantly on the pace in his AMAC Racing machine. He qualified on pole positi...

Remembering Budapest - We Couldn’t Could We?

Image
By Evan Dalton for the DCU Bulletin Image Credit : SPORTSFILE The Halgrimsson Era was over. A home victory over Portugal, will live nice in the memory, but overall it was a dire attempt at a stateside World Cup.  Dominik Szoboszlai is trotting around the pitch, enjoying every moment. He’s holding the love of all his Hungarian faithful at the Puskás Aréna. Some are more in love with him right now than they are their significant other, and who could blame them. The goals came from Daniel Lukács and Barnabás Varga, but it was his control, his skill and his calm presence that kept this Hungarian team in front.  The sudden spike in SkyScanner activity, specifically looking at flights to the U.S.A from Budapest was beginning. The job was done. Well done Ireland. Once again, so close, yet so far.  In the blink of an eye, Finn Azaz was finally awoken from a disappointing slumber. His attempts at attacking football were simply absent, until the 79th minute. A lofted ball allowed th...

“I live with racing, so being able to perform on the college level is a big deal for me” - The Ukrainian Racer Living His Dream With DCU Karting

Image
By Evan Dalton for The DCU Bulletin College sport is not about competition. It’s not about success. Yes, success is nice, but it’s not an ultimatum. College sport is about community. It’s about people.  Sports scholarships exist. DCU’s sport roster boasts some of the finest young athletes, who will become world beaters in their chosen field, but for the vast majority of competitors, it is about sharing your passion with people who love your passion. There is no one who embodies this more on the Glasnevin campus, than Pavlo Kyshkan.  Pavlo, or ‘Pasha’ as he likes to be called, races for DCU Karting’s Intervarsity Team. It’s easy for a go-karter or racing driver to live in their own world underneath the helmet, but this isn't how Pavlo chooses to live. He will be the first to discuss the events, share the triumphs and be compassionate in the failures, when things might not have worked out.  “I live with racing, so being able to perform even on the college level is a b...

Diving O’Donoghue Penalty Save Crowns DCU Intermediate Champions

Image
By Evan Dalton for The DCU Bulletin  Goalkeeper Cian O’Donoghue’s crucial penalty save helped crown DCU Dochas Eireann as All Ireland Intermediate Football champions after an impressive two point victory over Ulster University.  O’Donoghue, who plays club football with Louth’s Geraldines GFC, scored two, two point frees alongside executing a crucial penalty save in the 45th minute to finally earn the University a GAA title in 2026. The second year student was awarded Man Of The Match. DCU captain Paul Moran chipped over the first score from 20m out, but a slow start under the DCU Sports Ground lights had the sides level at 0-1 a piece after eight minutes. The first of O’Donoghue’s efforts propelled DCU into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 16 minutes, but a Dara Quinn two pointer for UU kept the northern side in check. The green flag would be raised for the first time by Longford man Caolan Lynch after 23 minutes. A beautiful cross field ball by Eoghan Scott was caught by Lynch, ...

THE NORTHERN IRISH RACE OF THE AGES - WORLD CHAMPIONS DESCEND UPON COUNTY ANTRIM

Image
By Evan Dalton Photo Courtesy Of       THE KLEMANTASKI COLLECTION Motorsport, in both the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland, has always been niche. Gaelic Football, Hurling and Association Football are the dominant games on the island. For young motorsport fans here, it is easy to think motorsport has no place in sporting history north and south of the border, but that couldn’t be further from the case. Both Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen have won races in Ireland, but the origin of world champions racing in Ireland starts in 1954. Dundrod is still extremely rural, with a population of 196. Back in the 1950’s, the buildings could be counted on two hands. It is located in County Antrim, 10 miles from Belfast. The Dundrod Circuit is now known as the famous venue of the Ulster Grand Prix motorcycle race, having moved from its old home, the Clady Circuit, in 1953. Its first events were four wheel races, starting in 1950 with the RAC Tourist Trophy.  The Royal Au...

Moving House, Trying To Find Garbage Cans, and Suit Shopping - How David Malukas Is Settling Into Life At Penske

Image
By Evan Dalton for All About Indycar Photo from Penske Entertainment David Malukas walked into his INDYCAR media day press conference with his usual excitement, this time with added enthusiasm, something that resembles a child starting a new year of school.  Malukas has been in this situation before. He has signed for a top INDYCAR team, and been there in their papaya colours for Media Day in downtown Indianapolis. This concept is not new to the Illinois native. It was the weeks after that wrecked him. His Mclaren career came crumbling down after that, when a biking accident at the start of February dislocated his wrist and tore ligaments in his arm. The team released Maluklas on April 29th, when he still hadn't recovered fully. “That year, 2024, I aged 10 years in one. It was a big learning curve for me,” said Maluaks. “I think everything happened for a reason. I think without the injury and the way everything happened from 2024 to now, I don't think I'd really be here.” I...

“They don’t care who you are” - How Marcus Armstrong’s Off Season Karting Has Prepared Him For INDYCAR In 2026

Image
By Evan Dalton for All About Indycar Meyer Shank Racing’s Marcus Armstrong spent five weeks racing go-karts in Europe during his INDYCAR off-season, he told All About Indycar during Media Day.  Armstrong was able to relax heading into the 2026 off-season, as his INDYCAR future was already set in stone after Mike Shank and MSR confirmed the Kiwi’s return for the year ahead, however, he chose not to.  “I did five weeks of karting, which was quite interesting, with Tony Kart, my old European karting team.” Armstrong raced karts on the international stage until 2016, despite making his single seater debut two years earlier in the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship.  “European karting, frankly, there’s nothing like it. It’s pretty brutal. They don’t care who you are,” said Armstrong. “They are going to treat you like rubbish when you’re on track with them. It was great to work on my race craft there and work with such a great team.”  Tony Kart is the flagship ope...
